The first night, nothing. The second, a faint grey smudge that our camera insisted was green. On the third night, the sky simply broke open.

Why the far north works

Aurora activity peaks around the magnetic poles, and northern Norway, Swedish Lapland and Finland sit right under the auroral oval. Add long winter nights and you get the best odds on Earth.

The aurora doesn't rise. It arrives — all at once, everywhere.

Practical tips

  • Check the Kp forecast, but watch the clouds more closely.
  • Get away from town lights; even 15 minutes of driving helps.
  • Dress for standing still at -15°C, not for walking.
